While I haven’t read what is considered the 5th book (I’m probably going to get the Kindle version), I LOVE this entire series. I literally feel like I know this family because they’re so real. Miss Jenesequa did an amazing job bringing each of the siblings and their lives to life.
Book 1: I Got You
Y’all… this one was TOO CUTE. Jordana Evans is the oldest of four and the only girl. Her brothers Jasiel, Jaxson and Jaiden treat her like she’s the baby and are so overprotective of her. Their mother Numa is the matriarch that ensures they remain close and spend consistent time with each other. Jordana is a hustler. She’s a braider and hair stylist that hopes to someday own her own business. She feels like a typical round the way girl. She tends to make house calls for her favorite client, 3 year old Kaiser, at the request of his mom Gabrielle. She and Kaiser have the cutest relationship and he looks forward to his braid sessions with her. One of these sessions happens at his uncle Genesis’ house and the minute these two lay eyes on each other, the chemistry is unmatched.
Genesis is a straight clown and hilarious as hell to me. He runs a multimillion dollar business and owns the hottest restaurant in the city. After meeting Jordana, he’s fixated on her. She too continues to think about him constantly. Jordana and her favorite cousin Charlie were supposed to meet up for dinner and drinks at the hottest spot in the city to have a drink Charlie’s boss named for her. Charlie is unable to make the date, however Jordana stays and discovers that Genesis is the owner and also Charlie’s boss. Sparks fly between the two and what they think is going to be just a fling turns into an addiction that neither one of them can break free from. They try to keep things on the downlow and tell no one, not even Charlie.
Jordana guards her heart because of a past breakup which creates a barrier that Genesis doesn’t even know he’s up against. Genesis battles remaining out of his father’s shadow and holding his own without using his father’s name. When Jasiel meets him for the first time and realizes he’s the son of a notorious kingpin, things go south real quick. Jordana is determined to prove to her brothers that Genesis is nothing like his father and is good for her. But the chemistry between these two? They may just be one of my favorite romance in the making love stories.
Book 2: Jasiel the King Who Got Me
Jasiel, Jasiel, Jasiel. Ok so this book was entirely TOO SHORT or is that just me? I feel like it was significantly shorter than the other 3 books in this series and because of that, it felt rushed. Jasiel is the oldest brother and works as an FBI agent. I definitely was not feeling him in book 1 because his mean ass was doing too much. But he definitely redeemed himself.
At Jordana’s 30th birthday party, thrown by her now husband Genesis, Jasiel finds himself enamored with Gabrielle, Genesis’ sister. They’ve known each other for three years now and they’ve all become one big happy family. Except he wants her in ways no one should want family. He thought she was feeling him too until he sees her flirting with another man at the party and leaves without saying goodbye. Gabrielle now feels she must have imagined this connection between them and decides he must not be interested and courts that other guy. And while he treats her like a queen and showers her with gifts, she feels no spark whatsoever but continues to date him. Jasiel can no longer hide his feelings once he finds out she’s out on a date with this guy and shows up at her place to wait for her to return. They passionately profess their feelings for one another that night only for her to kick him out when her best friend Destiny arrives. Destiny apparently has a crush on Jasiel and not only does Gabrielle not want the family to find out about them but also doesn’t want to hurt Destiny. This leads to Jasiel feeling like she’s ashamed of him and so he ignores her. Starting a vicious cycle of them trying to one up each other.
The entire family plans a vacation house getaway surprise for Gabrielle’s 30th birthday. Jasiel and Gabrielle both get a surprise when she shows up on the arm of the other man and they all have to spend the weekend in the same house. Needless to say, the sexual tension between Jasiel and Gabrielle takes center stage and they finally surrender to one another and let everyone know about the love they share. Again, this one was also super cute but entirely too short. I feel there was no true build up to their relationship but it somehow still worked. But hear me, the way Jasiel not only prayed for her and over her but also let ol’ boy know that she was no longer his concern and to not touch her?! Chile boo, these Evans men definitely have me in a chokehold like the Danger brothers for sure.
Book 3: Jaxson the King Who Got Me
The more of these types of stories I read, the more alarmed I am about the hold BDSM has on me. Jaxson is the middle brother. He’s a successful real estate agent who wants and tries to do everything himself, refusing to hire a team beyond the sales agents he currently has. He is the ultimate control freak. Genesis sees him working himself into the ground and attempts to get him to hire Nikita, a marketing mastermind who currently works for him. Because Jaxson is opposed to the idea, when Nikita shows up for her interview, early at that, he gives her hell and talks down to her. Nikita isn’t with the shit and gives it right back to him. Because Jaxson is a DOM, not only is he turned on by the fact that she calls him out on his shit, he’s also angry and wants to punish her. Because, well SHE’S RIGHT ABOUT HIM.
Nikita secretly enjoys being a voyeur and frequents a club to watch other couples. One evening while at her favorite spot, she looks up and who does she see? Yep, Jaxson. He is in disbelief as well and demands to know why she’s there. After a back and forth between the two, she agrees to become his sub in exchange for the marketing director position at his company. Neither of them thought it would be more than it was but she began to challenge him in and out of the bedroom. He too began to challenge her and their relationship grew because they took care of one another beyond the sex. She wanted nothing more than for him to see how she could help him and his business thrive while he wanted to completely have her turned out so no other man could ever have her. Nikita is Jaxson’s mirror and neither one of them could escape what was destined to be. This one was such a thrill to read. The power dynamics and the shift in him once he falls for her and softens was so damn sexy.
Book 4: Jaiden the King Who Got Me
Now, for 3 books Jaiden has gotten on my damn nerves. He’s the baby of the bunch, always goofy, cracking jokes and sellin’ out everybody. As Jaxson and Nikita say their “I do’s”, Jaiden starts to feel inadequate. He realizes all of his siblings have found their happily ever after and he hasn’t. He had convinced himself that he was content just being a player and having multiple women at his disposal. Until he wasn’t. He falls into a deep depression after that, even neglecting his work as a contractor, web developer and tech genius.
Dionne is a powerhouse of a business woman who is fresh out of a draining relationship. In the midst of ending things, she rebounds with her ex’s former friend which proves to be a disaster as well. Her skincare empire’s website crashes for the second time and she is scrambling to find someone to repair it and keep it from happening again. She reaches out to a friend who recommends Jaiden, except Jaiden is MIA dealing with his depression and ignoring all calls and texts. Jaiden is still Jaiden though and continues his sexcapades, getting caught by the boyfriend of one of his conquests. Jordana and her girls show up to his home and in the midst of it all, Dionne calls him directly. Their interaction is seriously cute and flirty, beyond unprofessional, but it just worked so well to pull me in. I smiled from ear to ear the whole time.
The two arrange to meet to discuss her business needs and are immediately attracted to one another. The women in her office are constantly flirting with him and she has to share her office space with him for the two week duration of the project. They have lunch together one afternoon and get to know each other very well. That lunch turns into her treating him to dinner, which turns into him walking her to and physically placing her into her car before they leave for the night and demanding she text him when she arrives home. One text leads to another (see what I did there?) and they are both secretly dating and smitten with each other.
Dionne is guarded because of growing up with vitiligo and always having people stare at her or treat her differently. Her mother also left her to be raised by a single father who has since passed away, which also affects her mental health. Jaiden battles his own demons, using sex and his silliness as coping mechanisms. When their two worlds collide, their ability to become each other’s soft place is so beautifully written. I love how Jaiden pours into Dionne and is willing to do anything for her knowing she can do those things for herself. I also love how Dionne doesn’t have an “I don’t need anyone” attitude when she very well could because she’s that much of a boss. But what happens when Dionne finally introduces him to her godfather who helped raise her? He’s the now ex boyfriend of the woman Jaiden was having a threesome with when he got caught. Whew chile! I love the way the resolution organically happens after this and now Mama Evans is the catalyst.
I will say, I was angry. Like legit angry when she came over and ruined his “will you be my girlfriend” surprise that he had all planned out for her that night lol. I was so excited to see how his lil romantic evening at Genesis’ restaurant in one of the private rooms would go and she sashayed her ass over to his place in a trench coat and ruined it. I mean, what happened between them that night was STILL spicy, steamy and whewww but yeah. I loved how both of them wanted nothing more than to protect one another and keep a smile on each other’s face. I didn’t think anyone could tame Jaiden but baby, Dionne had him saying yes ma’am every chance she got! Their sugar mama/sugar daddy/sugar baby/pretty baby nicknames were adorable.
Overall I truly enjoyed this series, although I must admit I am not a fan of Miss Jenesequa’s writing style. I feel it’s entirely too repetitive and overdone. I’m glad I listened to the audiobooks vs reading or I may have DNF.
In each of the books there is a light shown on how working through childhood trauma and healing from the past, relationships or otherwise, is the key to finding yourself and the life you want. I appreciate the depth of the stories and the characters themselves.
TW: depression, childhood trauma, BDSM, toxic relationships
Rating: The Evans men now have me in a chokehold👀
