Hear me. This entire book is UNHINGED and so unserious but, yo!!! I could not stop listening to it lol.
And now I have to find the first book because that one introduces all the characters. Yes, you can apparently read them out of order but they are interconnected and I need to go back.
Now, let’s talk about Fire and Lynx.
Lynx is the best friend of McKoy, who is married to Earth, Fire’s twin. Fire has been attracted to Lynx from day one but instead of telling her, he toys with her, makes fun of her vitiligo and is outright mean to her. She tries not to let him get under her skin when he calls her “Polka Dot” but she is feelin him too so it hurts. They cannot even be in the same room without arguing.
While Fire is wild AF and clearly should be or has already been in a psych ward, he has a huge heart. He is such a good dad to his twin boys and has a loving relationship with his family. But his obsession with Lynx is scary and he will not stop until she knows she belongs to him.
The story takes shape when a spat between Fire and Lynx playfully turns physical. She basically puts on boxing gloves and goes to town. Except her boyfriend shows up and snatches her off of him and yells at her. Welp! That was all it took to unleash the crazy in Fire and let’s just say the boyfriend ends up hospitalized 😬. From that moment on, the boyfriend is hell bent on making Fire suffer, including taking everything he owns and having his twins taken away from him.
Lynx initially believes the twins are Fire’s biological children and later learns he’s in the process of adopting them. Fear that her boyfriend’s vendetta may cause the adoption to fall through prompts Lynx to agree to pretend to be his live in fiancée in effort to prove to the courts the twins have a loving, stable, two parent home. She already loves the twins but, in that setting, she becomes their protector and they become her babies. What Lynx doesn’t realize is that Fire has already branded her as his wife, the mother of his children, and fully believes that is her role. No vows nor wedding be damned.
Fire learning to be soft with her and open his heart to her is adorable. The now ex-boyfriend catches hell throughout because Fire is literally insane and does insane shit lol but it is hilarious. Lynx cannot help but fall deeper in love with him the more time they spend in this fake relationship. When she finally discovers the truth and walks out of his life, she is hit with the realization that he is not going ANYWHERE and she is his for life. Did I mention that even with all this craziness on the page Lynx doesn’t even attempt to run? Again, UNHINGED.
I’m not going to tell y’all how I questioned my own sanity and thought many of the characters in this book were in an insane asylum where they only come out to play when their personalities permitted. I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry or be alarmed. Hell, sometimes I did all three. I am still cackling at all the handles being removed from Lynx’s pots and pans in her house. And can I just say that the ending scene regarding the boyfriend and his family is probably the most disturbing part of this book to me? lol I could literally feel the wide-eyed stares into space through the page.
Fake dating. Enemies to lovers. Forced proximity. Chaos, heart and hilarious energy from start to finish. This one was a vibe.
TW: violence, toxic behavior
Rating: Absolutely unhinged. Absolutely worth it. 😂🔥
