I don’t even know how to put into words what Revive Me took me through. These three books surrounding Mallory Kent and Chris Johnson took me through every emotion known to man.
We got a glimpse of them in Release Me but to go back in time and see the full weight of the history between them was A LOT.
Mallory was dealing with the guilt and regret of her past, her twin brother’s death, misogynoir while getting her degree and longing for true connection. Chris was dealing with the weight of his family’s expectations, trauma and guilt surrounding his mother’s death and wanting love on his own terms. The fact that these two broken people found one another was one thing but knowing they were clearly destined to be with one another no matter what is what made this series stand out.
They dealt with so much that tried to keep them apart. When Chris walked away in part one, I was heartbroken for him and Mallory. But I still feel that he was a coward. I understand why he did what he did but to allow her to think their love wasn’t strong enough was cruel. Yes, he wanted to protect her, but he shouldn’t have made either call without her input.
Then to come back into her life, unhappily married to the woman you broke her for, while she was grieving the loss of her brother, insert yourself back into her life, get back into her bed and her heart and leave her again?! Chris really pissed me TF off. Their love was so raw and real but for her to get to the place where she no longer wanted pieces of him if she couldn’t have him completely? Ugh. Mallory deserved so much better and Chris projected too much of his own trauma onto their relationship. Therapy was needed all around.
Even knowing that Eric’s death was going to happen didn’t prepare me for it in real time. I hated that Chris was so far removed from New Haven and everyone in it that he found out about Eric’s death the way he did. Also, the fact that Chris had known about Dominic’s feelings for Sloane since they met at the frat party was wild. I also loved having the backdoor view into not only Dominic and Sloane’s relationship but also Sebastian and Nadia.
But part three gave me life! Chris finding out that what he thought he knew about his mother’s death wasn’t the whole truth. Reese finally getting what he deserved. Chris walking away from everything and working to win Mallory back. The man literally bought the house he knew Mallory wanted then asked her to give him ten dates to prove how much he loved her and wanted her forever. One for every shared occasion they missed because of his decision to give into his father’s blackmail. I had to give it to him, all of it was smooth AF. Especially the ten dates. Once he was on his grown man ish, there was no escaping him. Mallory tried her hardest, but she knew damn well that man wasn’t letting her go, nor did she want him to.
I loved this series.
TW: grief, death, misogynoir, trauma, infidelity
Rating: Sometimes a love comes along that is destined no matter what. Chris & Mallory are that love.
