Ok so Kiki and Malakai are back but unfortunately, they called it quits three years ago. The book goes back and forth from past to present to sort of catch you up on what went down.
Kiki has moved on and is in a relationship with wealthy tech bro Bakari but feeling unfulfilled. She has her podcast The HeartBeat but the company wants to water down her brand by adding a cohost. Kiki wasn’t going for it so she quit, to the dismay of her boyfriend.
Good news is that Aminah and Kofi are getting married! Bad news, Kiki is the maid of honor and Malakai is the best man. They haven’t seen or spoken to one another since the breakup, and everyone is on eggshells wondering how this will play out.
Kiki wasn’t expecting to have to see Malakai until later in the year, but the engagement celebration gets pushed up to accommodate everyone’s travels.
With only three weeks to wrap her mind around the weird space she and her boyfriend are in, figure out what to do about work and brace herself to deal with unspoken and unresolved issues with Malakai, Kiki is a wreck. Meanwhile, Malakai has been living his best life and on the rise as a filmmaker in California.
Needless to say, once they are back in the same space at the same time, they also end up in the same bed again. Further complicating things. Neither of them is willing to concede what was the cause of their demise and are once again forced together to work on a creative project, this time for a pop star. Said pop star and Malakai also had a thing after his breakup with Kiki so… awkward.
Both Malakai and Kiki are trying to fight the chemistry that continues to blaze between them since they are too stubborn to admit they still want one another. This battle is hilarious at times. They kept being placed in situations where they were alone together and it always turned intimate. They were simply drawn to one another like magnets. They even unknowingly ended up in adjoining penthouses in another country for the bachelor and bachelorette parties. Literally cosmic.
I loved watching Kiki and Malakai adjust to knowing their now fully adult selves. He still goes above and beyond to make sure she is happy, feels loved and supported in spite of everything between them.
If you enjoyed Honey & Spice, I highly recommend this super cute follow up.
