Ok so since y’all probably think I only read raunchy ass books with thugged out MMCs… AND DO! But please know ya girl is an avid reader who loves to learn.
My chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (Omicron Delta Zeta) partners with the Boynton Beach Library and Boynton Beach Mental Health Committee on a regular basis to host thoughtful discussions on books relating to mental health. As you all know, May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s so important that we were able to have thoughtful dialogue surrounding mental health.
The Balancing Act explores creating healthy relationships without losing yourself in the process. The time taken to explain needs, boundaries, trauma, and the importance of open communication in this book is commendable. The way Mrs. Tawwab delves into how the past can show up in our current bonds and the importance of a healthy support system allowed me to truly self-reflect.
One of my favorite quotes from this one is “do not confuse what you didn’t get as a child with what you don’t need as an adult.” That one hit me because I saw myself in so many of the scenarios throughout, such as disconnecting, feeling uncomfortable asking for help, fear of vulnerability and the ways people attempt to protect themselves. The analogy to the Grinch was spot on.
What really struck me was the section on the signs you are high functioning when battling mental health issues. While I knew this, seeing the signs laid out right down to being fiercely independent was still eye opening. The author further emphasized that a diagnosis is not a reflection of who you are or whether you can improve. It’s so important for people to hear and understand this because as also stated, the things we believe we unconsciously perpetuate.
This one should be required reading in general, but I highly recommend it to anyone who is struggling to understand who they are, create connections and find peace in doing so.
