While this book was super cute overall, I just felt that it was rushed and at times poorly written.
It started with Martese Lawson, a social worker, finding out that her husband Rick of 20 years wasn’t deployed like he was supposed to be when he was killed in a car accident in Georgia, 30 minutes from their home. From there, things spiraled downward from the reading of his will where his other “wife”, Anne and their baby showed up.
He was essentially living a double life that Martese knew nothing about. She was a total and complete wreck after learning this news. She went to visit an attorney’s office to seek help, Preston Miles Jr., but was so distraught that she never finished her consultation.
On the night she was ready to end her life, her boss called to say she needed her to come in because she had a pressing case. That case involved getting 9 year old Amaya to her new guardian after the tragic loss of both her parents. That guardian ended up being none other than Preston, a functioning alcoholic and ladies’ man. Martese was protective of Amaya and wouldn’t let her out of her sight until she knew he was capable of caring for her the way she needed.
From there the story just took off and turned into the three of them essentially becoming a family with so many twists and turns along the way, including Anne abandoning Rick, Jr. and expecting Martese to become his guardian. Everything happened entirely too quickly, and I wish the author had taken her time to flesh the story out.
Now, let me just say I loved Preston’s freaky ass. That man was bold AF, didn’t care what came out his mouth, and backed up every damn thing he said. He was exactly who TF he thought he was lol.
Overall, I enjoyed this foe turned lover story and the happy ending. It was a good quick read; however, it could have been so much better.
TW: suicide ideation, infidelity, grief
Rating: Preston was everything. The pacing was not. 3/5
